Editing for Academics

Are you a scholar or a graduate student looking to publish in English?  Have you written an article, paper, thesis chapter, or grant proposal, but need a native speaker’s eye to perfect its prose?

As a historian with a PhD from Georgetown University, I understand the importance of publishing research in English-language journals and other scholarly resources. I also know that good writing can make the difference between publication and rejection.

I offer academic editing services for non-native English speakers–graduate students, professors, and independent scholars.

In my hands, your work will undergo what I call the “DeLorenzo Treatment:” a thorough examination of grammar, semantics, style, and structure as only a skilled translator with a background in academia can provide.

I especially focus on:

  • accessible language. As longtime crusader against academic jargon, I can make your paper more understandable to people outside your field and specialization. Scholars are especially known for using non-English words to represent concepts that originated in other languages and cultures. Unfortunately, this practice often renders academic writing difficult for non-specialists to understand. My background as a translator makes me especially skilled at finding translations for these terms whenever possible.
  • sentence and paragraph length. Many languages favor long sentences, but English does not. Let me break your sentences and paragraphs down into bite-sized pieces that readers outside the academy can easily digest.
  • false cognates. How many times have you used a word like “popular,” “ancient,” or “fabric,” not realizing that it doesn’t mean the same thing in English as it does in Spanish, French, or German? My skilled translator’s eye will pick out these “false friends” and find words that more accurately convey your meaning.

If you want to impress your reviewers and your readers, contact me today to give your paper the DeLorenzo Treatment.
